Following the 98% in favour results of our Fringe poll we’ve continued planning towards staging the first Perth Fringe in 2012. This has included taking on board all the feedback and recommendations gathered from this site alongside ongoing work and consultation with stakeholders including other Fringe festivals around Australia and the world.

The key feedback we’ve taken on board with our planning?

What you Want:

•            You want a Perth Fringe.

•            You want it to be part of a global Fringe network.

•            You want it to be high profile platform where new work across all art-forms can be presented to an audience hungry for Fringe.

•            You are ok with a Fringe model that involves works presented primarily at own risk, but you want some controls included that increase the chance that there will be audience for all works.

•            You want access to a range of Fringe venue options.

•            You want Perth Fringe to arrive with big impact and have real presence.

What you Don’t Want:

•            You don’t want the 100% open access free-for-all that represents the ‘pure’ Fringe model like Edinburgh and Adelaide Fringes because there’s concern about size of Perth market and size and make-up of program.

•            You don’t want inclusion of the ‘lottery system’ used in North American Fringes in how works get into the Perth Fringe.

What we’re planning to Do:

•            Stage the first Perth Fringe in early 2012 running before and alongside the 2012 Perth International Arts Festival.

•            Make Perth Fringe a platform for work by local, national and international artists with targets set for this mix.

•            Ensure all work in the Perth Fringe has never been seen in Perth before.

•            Set targets for art-form mix across the Perth Fringe program.

•            Designate a precinct for the Perth Fringe where most of the program will occur in traditional and non-traditional venues and spaces.

•            Build engagement with the global Fringe network as a key part of the Perth Fringe model.

•            Keep informing you all at every step of the way where we can about where are going with Perth Fringe.

As a Department of Culture and the Arts (DCA) key triennial funded arts organisation, Artrage receives core funding from the State of Western Australia. We are incorporating the Perth Fringe model into our 2011-2013 business plan which will be lodged with DCA in June 2010.

Until response to this plan is received we can’t provide more detail than the key points outlined above, but look forward to doing so as soon as we can.
